Oral history interview with Sam M. Stusser and Hoda Stusser Greenberg, June 5, 1991.

Stusser and Greenberg relate the history of their families, who were part of the early Jewish communities in both Tacoma and Seattle. Nathan Friedman, a great-granduncle, came to Tacoma in 1849, and helped thirteen of his relative's families to also settle in Tacoma. Hugo Stusser, their paternal grandfather, founded Tacoma's first orthodox shul in 1887. Stusser and Greenberg also discuss their maternal grandfather, Reverend Samuel Friedman (unrelated to Nathan Friedman). Reverend Friedman was born in Lithuania but came to the United States for cantorial training. After traveling the U.S. as a magid, he settled in Seattle. He was one of the early cantors for Bikur Cholim and Herzl (when it was still Orthodox). His wife, Rika Golumb Friedman, was a founder of the Hebrew Ladies Free Loan Society. Sam Stusser also tells the story of the family business. His father, Charles Stusser, opened a small leatherworking and canvas factory in Seattle, then got into the quilt business circa 1929-1930. He talks about family real estate purchases, including the Globe Hotel, where Bikur Cholim once rented space for services and Talmud Torah. Stusser also mentions Bikur Cholim rabbis, including Rabbi Genss, the Home Colony community, and early Sephardim in Seattle. Hoda Greenberg discusses the founding of Hillel on the University of Washington campus.
